Making Instant Payments Part of Your Payments Strategy

The future of money movements both domestically and cross-borders is becoming faster and cheaper. Instant payments are fast becoming a mainstay in the payments landscape and are increasingly favored by consumers for a broad range of use cases spanning P2P transfers, P2M purchases, B2B transfers. This trend is especially apparent across Asia as many countries have rolled out domestic instant payment rails enabling customers to pay via QR code, Business Registration Numbers, phone numbers etc.
However the merchant experience has not always been smooth. While there are clear benefits to accepting real-time payments, there has been relatively poor integration into merchants’ back end systems for myriad of reasons (e.g. different settlement times / mechanisms, separate liquidity pools, disparate messaging standards / APIs, etc)
What types of merchants are going to see the most benefits from accepting instant payments? How can merchants take advantage of this trend to innovate the customer payment experience, drive down the cost of payments acceptance and streamline backend reconciliation and settlement processes? What approaches have successful merchants taken in this regard? Across Asia-Pacific, regulatory interventions aimed at alleviating rising card fees and establishing a more efficient payments landscape have had huge impacts on the card-acceptance markets in each respective country. These regulatory interventions can be viewed as introducing competition and controls within the card market and competition with the card market through investment in local payments methods. Within card markets, regulators have enacted a variety of interventions, such as setting the maximum price of interchange, mandating co-badging, or guaranteeing merchant surcharging rights. Interventions seeking to enhance competition with the card market have led to the rise of APMs such as PayTo in Australia and UPI in India.
